CEPI, Brazil’s Ministry of Health and Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) will co-host a unique global gathering of pandemic preparedness and response experts to advance the global pandemic preparedness agenda.

The Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit 2024, taking place on 29/30 July in Rio de Janeiro, will convene R&D experts, government officials, civil society representatives, and leaders from global health and industry organizations from around the world.

Building on the learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Summit will focus on three central themes of the global pandemic preparedness agenda that, if designed and aligned in a complementary manner, could transform the world’s ability to respond quickly and equitably to the next Disease X:

  • Enabling equitable access to vaccines, medicines and other health technologies through strengthening local and regional production capacity.
  • Delivering the 100 Days Mission for vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics.
  • Enhancing global disease surveillance.

Partners at FIND, the International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Unitaid, and the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence are contributing to the design of the Summit programme. The Summit will be livestreamed, and the proceedings, outcomes and recommendations will be published and delivered to global decision-makers to support international pandemic preparedness efforts.

The German-East European & Central Asian Health Forum, organised by the German Eastern Business Association and the German Health Alliance as an Official Side Event of the World Health Summit, provides a framework for exchange and networking with decision-makers from Germany and the partner countries, company representatives, experts and researchers.

The seventh edition of the Forum will be dedicated to the topic “Advancing Healthcare Together: Investments and Partnerships”.

In recent years, the healthcare systems in East Europe and Central Asia have witnessed significant developments and transformations. Governments in the region have been actively focusing on improving healthcare infrastructure, increasing access to quality medical services, and implementing health policy reforms. Efforts have been made to enhance healthcare financing mechanisms and promote public-private partnerships to address the diverse healthcare needs of their populations. Additionally, advancements in medical technology and digital health solutions have played a pivotal role in improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

Despite witnessing advancements in recent years, the healthcare systems in East Europe and Central Asia continue to face ongoing challenges. These include disparities in the distribution of healthcare resources, shortages in the healthcare workforce, and the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases. These issues remain areas of concern that require attention and collaborative efforts to address effectively.

As the region continues to evolve, stakeholders remain committed to fostering innovation, cooperation, and cross-border collaborations to ensure sustainable and equitable healthcare development in East Europe and Central Asia.

We would like to offer you an exchange with high-ranking decision-makers from our partner countries as well as representatives of leading companies and experts from the health sector.

The Forum takes place as an on-site conference in Berlin. The working language is English.

Participation is free of charge.

The field of health policy and systems research (HPSR) seeks to understand and improve how societies organize themselves in achieving collective health goals, and how different actors interact in the policy and implementation processes to contribute to policy outcomes. Interdisciplinary by nature, HPSR aims to provide a comprehensive picture of how health systems respond and adapt to health policies, and how health policies can shape − and be shaped by − health systems and the broader determinants of health.

This webinar aims to highlight several current initiatives related to health policy and systems research in Germany, and to discuss and explore entry points for strengthening collaboration and partnerships for advancing HPSR within Germany and with international institutions.

The webinar is jointly organized by the German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA); the Department of Population Medicine and Health Services Research (AG2) in the School of Public Health at Bielefeld University; and the Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research, an international partnership hosted by the World Health Organization (The Alliance).

Over the past four years, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted daily life, placed a heavy burden on healthcare systems worldwide and highlighted glaring inequalities in the management of global health crises. It has revealed significant gaps in disease surveillance and data sharing and highlighted the urgent need to strengthen global health research. The strategy of intensive containment of the COVID-19 pandemic has often been at the expense of tackling other infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV, leading to fragmented and nationally focussed solutions.

The need for a more equitable and coherent global health strategy, particularly with regard to preparing for and responding to future pandemics, is clear. The webinar "Initiating Change: A global health approach in the wake of pandemics" o will bring together experts from national and international health bodies, policymakers and the pharmaceutical industry to discuss the pressing issues of global health policy and pandemic prevention. In particular, the focus is on ensuring equitable access to medicines and vaccines, promoting global health research and improving surveillance and data exchange mechanisms. It is based on the conference report "Global Health Approach for Infectious Diseases - A Proposal for the Next Decade",  a joint publication of the national academies of Ethiopia (EAS), Germany (Leopoldina), Senegal (ANSTS) and South Africa (ASSAf), which emerged from the workshop "Infectious Diseaseas beyond COVID-19" on 23-24 May 2023 in Berlin (weblink).

The Global Health Summer programme is a one-week course in which students and young professionals from diverse disciplines and regions of the world come together to learn, discuss, and connect at the intersections of health, peace, and socio-ecological transformation. It is accompanied by a one-day public conference, organized to a great extent by summer school alumni.

This year’s Global Health Summer School will focus on trauma, empowerment, and the right to health in the context of forced displacement and flight. Throughout the program, an intersectional and emancipatory perspective is encouraged. Insights into global health architecture and its interplay with migration politics will be gained. Academic debates on trauma, resilience, and healing, considering the role of culture, society, and politics, will be discussed. Questions will be raised on how human rights-based and decolonial approaches to trauma and psychosocial work change the way violence and health are perceived. To achieve this, lived experiences of migrant people and refugees will be juxtaposed with critiques of border regimes and asylum systems of the Global North.

The course fees are as follows:

Students: 250 Euro (incl. 100 Euros for meals)
Professionals (with regular income): 450 Euros (incl. 100 Euros for meals)
IPPNW members: 190 Euro (incl. 100 Euros for meals)

Please hand in your application through the application form until May 29th 2024.
