📈 The WHO/World Bank UHC Global Monitoring Report 2025 shows the global service coverage index rose from 54 in 2000 to 71 in 2023 – meaning more people can access essential health services. Financial hardship from health expenses also declined, from 34% to 26%. Progress was especially strong in low-income countries investing in 🏥 primary care and 🛡️ insurance schemes for vulnerable groups. https://www.who.int/data/monitoring-universal-health-coverage
Germany remains a committed UHC advocate – from co-founding the P4H health financing network to backing the €75 million 💶 Debt2Health swap with Indonesia in 2024, the largest to date, aimed at improving public health investments. Germany also supports 💉 vaccine equity and health financing reform in countries like Kenya, Indonesia, Tanzania, and Ghana, and provides technical expertise through its development agency GIZ and the UHC203 alliance.
⚠️ Still, 4.6 billion people lack access to essential services and 2.1 billion face financial hardship to access health care. UHC remains within reach – but not at this pace. It requires stronger political will, sustained investment, and a relentless focus on equity.

🔔 Door #11 – Strengthening WHO’s Core Funding for Health Security 🌍💼
Despite geopolitical tensions, budget cuts, and the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization, 2025 saw an important step forward for the organisation’s sustainable financing.
🌐 At WHA78, Member States approved a second 20% increase in mandatory membership fees, adding an extra US$90 million annually to WHO’s core funding. By 2030, half of WHO’s budget is expected to come from predictable, stable funding.
💸Additionally, over US$210 million was pledged to the WHO’s Investment Round for the new four-year strategy – boosting predictable and independent global health work.
🇩🇪 Germany continued to lead as a global health champion. In April, €2 million was contributed to the World Health Organization, followed by a €10 million pledge in May by Federal Health Minister Nina Warken on the eve of the World Health Assembly. These contributions supplement Germany’s previous commitments of US$323 million (both assessed and voluntary) for 2024/2025.
Germany also reaffirmed its strong support for WHO reforms and emphasised WHO’s critical role in monitoring, pandemic preparedness, and equitable access to healthcare.

A milestone more than a decade in the making has now become reality. After calls dating back to 2009, a 2019 treaty, and the 2021 ratification threshold, 29 African Union member states have joined forces to accelerate access to safe, quality medicines across the continent.
🌐 Like the European Medicines Agency (EMA), AMA will harmonize national approvals so that one assessment can be recognised across countries – reducing delays, costs, and duplication.
⚡ Beyond regulatory efficiency, the AMA reflects Africa’s broader push for self-reliance, stronger local manufacturing, and a united response to counterfeit and substandard medicines.
Ghana’s Delese Mimi Darko takes office as the first Director-General, with the agency headquartered in Kigali, a growing hub for pharmaceutical innovation.
💶 AMA will be funded by African government contributions and industry fees, complemented by early partner support, including €10 million from the European Commission and €4 million from Belgium for regulatory harmonisation.
A landmark step toward a more resilient, self-reliant continental health architecture. 🌍✨

🔔 Door #9 – HPV Vaccine Saves Lives
💉🌍 In 2025, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, announced that its major three-year push to expand access to the HPV vaccine had reached its target ahead of schedule. As of this milestone, the HPV vaccine is being introduced in countries that together account for 89% of global cervical cancer cases. This effort has helped protect an estimated 86 million girls in the world’s highest-risk countries, and more than 1 million cervical cancer deaths have already been prevented.
🔬 Independent evidence reinforces these achievements: two Cochrane reviews found HPV vaccines to be highly effective and safe, with girls vaccinated at or before age 16 being 80% less likely to develop cervical cancer and with no evidence of serious safety concerns.
💶 Since 2014, Gavi’s investment in HPV vaccination has not only saved lives but also generated measurable economic returns, delivering more than US$ 2.32 billion in economic benefits across 43 lower-income countries.
🇩🇪 As a longstanding supporter of Gavi, Germany contributes to expanding equitable access to HPV vaccination worldwide, strengthening global efforts to reduce preventable cancer deaths.
✨ These gains show what can be achieved when Gavi, together with national governments, civil society and partners across Gavi-eligible countries, works to expand equitable access to life-saving vaccines.

🔔 Door #8 – Smarter Surveillance: EIOS 2.0 Launched in Berlin 🧭🦠💡
In October 2025, the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence in Berlin launched Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) 2.0, a major upgrade to the global early warning system that scans open sources in real time to detect public health threats.
Now used by 114 countries and around 30 organizations, the new system integrates AI tools, real-time multilingual analysis, and collaborative dashboards to detect outbreaks faster – from conflict zones to climate-driven disease hotspots. 🌍📊 🧬
🎤 “EIOS 2.0 is our bridge to the future: more open, more agile and more inclusive,” said Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, WHO.
The new Decision Support Simulator prototype was also unveiled, helping decision-makers test outbreak scenarios and response strategies in real time. 🧠📈.
🌍 The WHO Hub’s International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN) now connects 366 partners across 111 countries, expanding genomic surveillance with a $4M fund to strengthen pathogen tracking in low- and middle-income countries 🧬
🏛️ Supported by Germany, the European Commission and a global community of practice, the Berlin-based Hub is strengthening collaborative surveillance and pandemic readiness worldwide – a vital investment in global health security.

🔔 Door #5 – Beating an Ancient Cause of Blindness 👁️
In 2025, six countries – Burundi, Mauritania, Papua New Guinea, Senegal, Fiji and Egypt – were validated by WHO for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem.
Trachoma, the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness and a neglected tropical disease (NTD) has now been eliminated in 27 countries worldwide. Each success story reflects years of work with the WHO SAFE strategy (surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness and environmental improvements), stronger health systems and community-led action.
Germany remains engaged in the global effort against NTDs and was the first Western country to sign the Kigali Declaration on NTDs, backing the WHO road map to end these “invisible diseases” by 2030.
🌡️ Since NTDs still affect over a billion people and climate change drives their spread into new regions, including Europe, these successes serve as a powerful reminder that through perseverance and partnership, age-old diseases can also be defeated. ✨
💪 With sustained political will, funding and coordinated action across sectors, the global community can build on this momentum and move closer to ending NTDs everywhere.

🔔 Door #3 – 🌐 Polio Nears Eradication
📉 Global efforts against polio are paying off as cases fall to record lows: As of September, only 28 wild polio cases were reported worldwide – a dramatic drop from 99 cases in all of 2024 🦠.
🌍 Pakistan and Afghanistan, the last endemic countries, recorded their lowest numbers ever, marking unprecedented momentum.
🗣️ At a recent WHO forum in Pakistan, experts highlighted that eradication is now “within reach” but warned that dropping our guard at this stage would risk a dangerous resurgence.
⚠️ Although circulating vaccine derived polioviruses (cVDPV) cases are lower overall than in 2024, the WHO Polio Emergency Committee notes a rise in new outbreaks of two rare vaccine-derived strains in several countries, which remains a cause for concern.
🔎 With increasingly sensitive surveillance and ongoing vaccination campaigns, the world is close to eradicating polio – but the last mile still demands unwavering commitment 💪.
