The topic of climate change and mental health was also one of the main priorities during my youth consultations ahead of the 77. WHA. As emphasized in your policy brief, young people are particularly vulnerable in this aspect. You highlight this critical point and underscore the urgent need for integrated strategies so that we can support young people to cope with and address climate-related mental health challenges. It is important to note that young people are not only disproportionately affected by these issues but also possess the potential to be leaders of change. Therefore, involving them in decision-making processes and equipping them with the necessary resources is essential.     The Global Mental Health Community organized a great informal exchange with Dr. Lisa Hoffmann, Senior Policy Officer at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), on the topic of mental health in conflict settings last week. BMZ is organizing a round table on this topic ("Seeing the Unseen") at this year's WHS and we were able to provide inputs and share insights.

    On Wednesday the Global Mental Health Hub Community organized a meeting on the topics climate change & mental health.

    Our guest Jessica Newberry Lee Vay presented her work at Connecting Climate Minds. Connecting Climate Minds is a project that works across disciplines to connect the climate and mental health community. They aim to develop a global research agenda grounded in the needs of people with lived experience of mental health challenges in the context of climate change. To encourage interdisciplinary exchange they created a digital platform.     During the meeting, we discussed opportunities for future collaborations between our communities and talked about plans regarding the publication of our latest policy paper.

    The climate crisis is also a crisis of mental health. Climate change is impacting mental health, but while the climate and mental health movements are increasingly gaining attention, only few actors are addressing them as interlinked crises. Over the past few months, our Hub Community on Global Mental Health has contributed knowledge and expertise to the dialogue on the impact and consequences of climate change for mental health.

    Our guest for next week’s meeting, Jessica Newberry Le Vay, is a Climate Change and Health Policy Fellow at the Climate Cares Centre, Imperial College London. Her work in policy, education and research focuses on the links between climate change and mental health.

    On Wednesday, April 17th, at 5:00 p.m., we will meet to will talk about the publication of our policy brief on Planetary Mental Health, learn more about the work of the Climate Cares Centre and explore opportunities for future collaboration. We look forward to insightful discussions and welcome members of all Hub Communities to join us for this exciting event.
