The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is offering a Postgraduate Fellowship in Applied Epidemiology (PAE) within the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology. This is a full-time, fixed-term postgraduate training programme, designed to build hands-on expertise under the principle “Data for Action”.
🎓 Programme focus & key tasks:
• Conduct at least one outbreak investigation
• Lead surveillance and public-health-relevant research projects
• Publish and present findings in international journals and conferences (e.g. ESCAIDE)
• Contribute to routine infectious disease epidemiology, including pathogen-specific responsibilities and the epidemiological yearbook
• Collaborate with state authorities and local health offices (e.g. placements, epidemiological situation calls)
• Plan and deliver teaching activities
• Participate in on-call duty (24/7), crisis management tasks and short-notice field deployments in Germany
🌍 Training structure:
• Full-time, practice-oriented training under senior epidemiologists
• Theoretical modules delivered in 1–3 week blocks, mainly with ECDC Fellowship programmes (EPIET/EUPHEM)
• Mandatory in-person modules across EU member states (10–12 weeks total), requiring travel
• Additional learning opportunities through Public Health Intelligence work and international deployments
👤 Profile requirements:
• University degree in a Public Health–relevant field (Medicine, Health Sciences or related; Master/Diploma/State Exam)
• At least 2 years of relevant professional experience (e.g. public health service, epidemiology, research or clinical work)
• Advantageous: specialist medical training or formal epidemiology qualification (MPH, MSc Epidemiology, PhD)
• Knowledge of public health and epidemiological methods
• Basic skills in a statistical software (R desirable)
• Confident use of MS Office
• German and English at C1 level
