This May (13th-17th) the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health will be hosting a one-week in-person course entitled, "Applying the Rights Based Approach in Achieving Health Related SDGs". In this course we will be covering the theories and frameworks of Human Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals. We will also delve into access to health and medicines for vulnerable populations (living in remote areas, people with disabilities, people with mental illness, people in detention centers) and investigate the WHO pandemic treaty.

The course is coordinated by myself (Maureen McGowan) and my colleague Dr. Astrid Berner-Rodoreda and will include wonderful lecturers from various institutions (i.e., University of Toronto, Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences).

If this course is of interest to you, please feel welcome to visit our website or contact the email below! We hope to see you there!

The climate crisis is also a crisis of mental health. Climate change is impacting mental health, but while the climate and mental health movements are increasingly gaining attention, only few actors are addressing them as interlinked crises. Over the past few months, our Hub Community on Global Mental Health has contributed knowledge and expertise to the dialogue on the impact and consequences of climate change for mental health.

Our guest for next week’s meeting, Jessica Newberry Le Vay, is a Climate Change and Health Policy Fellow at the Climate Cares Centre, Imperial College London. Her work in policy, education and research focuses on the links between climate change and mental health.

On Wednesday, April 17th, at 5:00 p.m., we will meet to will talk about the publication of our policy brief on Planetary Mental Health, learn more about the work of the Climate Cares Centre and explore opportunities for future collaboration. We look forward to insightful discussions and welcome members of all Hub Communities to join us for this exciting event.

The Global Urban Health Community is organizing a lecture series on "City Diagnoses" to operationalize the previously published policy brief of urban health. Each week an expert from academia or practice is presenting their work on integrated assessments of urban health, as well as the challenges and opportunities arising.

Global urbanization is an ongoing megatrend. Cities are places that offer both opportunities and challenges for human health, and their dynamic development makes them “spaces of opportunity” for different futures. “City diagnoses” are intended as a tool to help identity a city’s health opportunities and challenges, develop a shared vision of the future for the local context, and create the basis for health-promoting action for a healthy future of cities. Together with interested parties and invited practitioners, the Global Urban Health Community Lecture Series will explore the concept of “city diagnoses” from different perspectives.

In today's lecture Jeffrey Butler of the TU Dresden and Co-Speaker of the DGSMP "Gesundheitsberichtserstattung" will give insights into the fine scale health reporting at the community level. The lecture will be in German.

Die Research Platform Neurourbanism (RPN), gefördert von der Berlin University Alliance (BUA) im Rahmen der Exzellenzförderung des Bundes und der Länder, hat ihr Forschungsprojekt "Exploring and Designing Urban Density. Neurourbanism as a Novel Approach in Global Mental Health", gestartet.

Dear Community,

We would like to draw your attention to the "Maternal Mental Health in Africa - Conversations" symposium on 19 June 2024. The free, hybrid event is organized by the Nuffield Department of Women's and Reproductive Health and the Africa Oxford Initiative at the University of Oxford, UK, in collaboration with the Perinatal Mental Health Project at the University of Cape Town.

Registration is open on Eventbrite.

The symposium promises rich discussions, collaboration opportunities, and the chance to shape the future of maternal mental health in Africa. We are particularly interested in hearing from speakers with real-world experience and expertise in the field from the African continent. The format will be conversational, with an emphasis on engaging discussions and debate.

We would like to invite you to submit an abstract for presentations at the symposium. The themes are:

  1. Moving from Trial to Scale
  2. Working with Social Determinants
  3. Sustaining Capacity beyond Research

Submissions are welcome from researchers, advocates, practitioners, and individuals working in the NGO sector, with a focus on experiences and work conducted in Africa or with relevance to the African context.

The deadline for abstract submissions is 15 April 2024.

We very much look forward to your contributions to this important conversation on maternal mental health in Africa.

Together with Dr. Lisa Hoffmann from the German Ministry for Economic Development Cooperation (BMZ), we want to get together to discuss the issue of global mental health in conflict settings, our Hub Community theme for 2024-25.

Ms. Hoffmann will outline the work of BMZ in this area. We will then hear short impulses on different areas of conflict; man-made conflicts, natural disasters and climate change. Finally, we will discuss the specific challenges of mental health in these particular areas.

We look forward to your participation!
