From May 20 to 23, 2025, the Geneva Health ForumĀ  (GHF) will take place during the World Health Assembly (WHA). As the WHA convenes a political audience, the GHF provides a unique platform conveyingĀ the perspectives of scientists, healthcare professionals and field actorsĀ on the main challenges and opportunities for global health.

True to its mission , the GHF Conference will:

Amplify Voices from the Field: We champion inclusivity by offering visibility to those on the frontlines of healthcare. Actors from LMICs will be given a privileged platform to share their experiences.

Create a Neutral Forum for Debate: Our commitment to impartiality ensures that the Geneva Health Forum serves as a neutral ground for informed and constructive discourse.

Foster Multidisciplinary Collaboration: We facilitate dialogue and collaboration among diverse stakeholders, spanning the political, academic, private sector, and civil society spheres.

Leverage Practical Experience:Ā Our initiatives are grounded in real-world practicality, drawing upon invaluable experience gained from on-the-ground projects.

Across our programme sessions, we will showcase community-driven successes, practical solutions, and scalable approaches that can inspire action worldwide. We strongly believe that sustained collaboration and cross-sector engagement can drive meaningful, lasting impact.
Together, let’s build the health of tomorrow—one connection, one solution, and one step at a time!

After the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries rallied around the idea of a pandemic treaty to enshrine global solidarity against pandemic threats and establish priorities for coordination, cooperation, and equity during a health emergency. After more than two years of complex negotiations, WHO Member States advanced a historic pandemic agreement on Wednesday April 16, 2025. As we move from negotiations to adoption and implementation — and we reach one year since approving amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHRs) — what have we learned about multilateralism for preventing, preparing for, and responding to pandemic threats? What’s needed to propel global coordination and alignment for proactive, equitable prevention, preparedness, and response?

Join Pandemic Action Network (PAN) and FOUR PAWS on the sidelines of WHA78 for The Pandemic Agreement and Beyond: International Solidarity in a Multipolar Era, to bring together leading stakeholders in the pandemic agreement and IHR processes for candid reflections and an action-oriented discussion on what comes next for multilateralism and pandemic threats, and how we continue to propel global action to keep the world healthy and safe.

Speakers include:

  • Fleur Davies, Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body; Assistant Secretary, Multilateral Health Branch, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia
  • Precious Matsoso, Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body; Director of the Health Regulatory Science Platform, University of the Witwatersrand

The risks of new pandemic threats are compounding. Zoonotic spillover and uncontained outbreaks are well-known risks that are not yet well enough addressed. Today, focus must also turn to biosecurity and biosafety risks. Beyond naturally occurring infectious disease threats, the risks of a manmade pandemic — by accident or by design — must be mitigated.Ā

Pandemic Action Network (PAN) and The Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response will convene a public event, Biosecurity: A Priority in the Era of Pandemics and AI, on the sidelines of WHA78 to discuss opportunities and risks in our evolving global health, technological, and geopolitical landscape, and offer concrete next steps to prioritise biosecurity and biosafety efforts needed to keep the world safe and secure.

Speakers include:

  • The Right Honourable Helen Clark, former PM of New Zealand, Member of The Elders and Co-Chair Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness & Response
  • Priya Basu, Executive Head, Pandemic Fund
  • Daniel Feakes, Chief of the Implementation Support Unit, Biological Weapons Convention
  • Richard Hatchett, CEO, Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)

The World Federation of Paediatric Intensive and Critical Care Society is introducing its Awareness Week, a global initiative where colleagues caring for critically ill children share their experiences and innovations in a modest and collaborative spirit. This event highlights the impact of climate change, epidemics, and socio-economic challenges on child health and clinical care. Through a series of podcasts and webinars, clinical teams and health workers from various regions will discuss their working environments and problem-solving strategies while outlining their expectations from global partnerships. For example, teams from Sub-Saharan Africa will explore how Madagascar’s increasing tropical storms disrupt healthcare infrastructure, agriculture, and even alter the epidemiology of infectious diseases such as malaria and dengue, further exacerbating food insecurity and malnutrition risks. In eastern DRC’s South Kivu, health workers will focus on the compounded challenges posed by a fragile health system, MPOX epidemics, conflict, and the needs of displaced populations. Moreover, all teams will describe how climate change adaptation measures—such as energy-efficient facility designs and renewable energy use (e.g., solar energy) to ensure decentralized oxygen provision, power essential biomedical equipment, and maintain cold chains for vaccinations—can reduce carbon emissions and improve access to essential services for vulnerable populations. Colleagues will further outline how minimal standards for essential paediatric and neonatal emergency and critical care—across different levels of referral pathways—can be defined via WHO recommendations and the contributions of international professional societies, emphasizing that access to these vital services is a key element of universal health care coverage, as outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Our colleagues will also emphasize the responsibility of industrialized countries to support climate change adaptation measures in regions that have historically contributed minimally to global COā‚‚ emissions.

Martin Lajous (National Institute of Public Health, Mexico & Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology, Poland)
šŸ—£ļø Talk Title: "Estimating effects on all-cause mortality in the presence of COVID-19 deaths"

In this presentation, Lajous will explore how the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new challenges for epidemiologic cohorts evaluating the impact of risk factors on non-communicable disease mortality. Using data from the Mexican Teachers’ Cohort and the Polish-Norwegian Study, he will discuss patterns of mortality during and after the pandemic, and outline various causal inference methods for dealing with competing risks like COVID-19 deaths. The talk will also delve into advanced analytic strategies such as g-formula, IPTW, and separable treatment effects, including their application in real-world studies on colon and prostate cancer.
