Registration: https://uni-ms.zoom-x.de/meeting/register/u5Itce6orT4sHdNH-vh9h8LZ4WWYTNVPDRxj

The Series directs special attention towards the added value of interdisciplinary and international cooperation in global health research. Every first Tuesday of the month, speakers share insights into their research projects while focusing on research processes, methods as well as lessons learned. Following the 30-minute speaker’s presentation, the Series encourages an academic exchange between the speaker and the audience in a 30-minute Q&A session.

In this edition of the GLOHRA Academy Series, Dr. Ahmed Abd El Wahed will introduce innovative approaches to think and tackle global One Health challenges. He is the lab head at the Institute of Animal Hygiene and Veterinary Public Health at Universität Leipzig and coordinator of an EDCTP-funded project to implement rapid diagnostics of emerging diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa. His extensive knowledge and experience in the field of infectious disease will inform his talk on Global One Health as an integrated approach to promoting human and animal health.

The destruction of the Gaza Strip since October 7 has been unprecedented. According to a damage assessment report by the European Union, while homes are the majority of the infrastructure that has been destroyed, critical facilities including hospitals, health facilities, and basic services for sanitation, hygiene, education, energy and ICT are all catastrophically damaged.

There are currently no fully functioning hospitals in the Gaza Strip, and an estimated 700 healthcare and aid workers’ lives have been lost. Medical facilities are lacking personnel, beds, medicine, equipment and electricity.  The extent of damage to both medical facilities and water and sanitation infrastructure raises significant concerns regarding the potential spread of communicable diseases

To prevent further loss of life, there is an imminent need to rebuild basic services, including most importantly, the healthcare sector.

We look forward to welcoming and hearing from representatives from humanitarian and development organisations, donors, academic institutions, civil society organisations, and professional bodies and member associations.

The Global Health Summer programme is a one-week course in which students and young professionals from diverse disciplines and regions of the world come together to learn, discuss, and connect at the intersections of health, peace, and socio-ecological transformation. It is accompanied by a one-day public conference, organized to a great extent by summer school alumni.

This year’s Global Health Summer School will focus on trauma, empowerment, and the right to health in the context of forced displacement and flight. Throughout the program, an intersectional and emancipatory perspective is encouraged. Insights into global health architecture and its interplay with migration politics will be gained. Academic debates on trauma, resilience, and healing, considering the role of culture, society, and politics, will be discussed. Questions will be raised on how human rights-based and decolonial approaches to trauma and psychosocial work change the way violence and health are perceived. To achieve this, lived experiences of migrant people and refugees will be juxtaposed with critiques of border regimes and asylum systems of the Global North.

The course fees are as follows:

Students: 250 Euro (incl. 100 Euros for meals)
Professionals (with regular income): 450 Euros (incl. 100 Euros for meals)
IPPNW members: 190 Euro (incl. 100 Euros for meals)

Please hand in your application through the application form until May 29th 2024.
