  • 🎄 GHHG Advent Calendar: #24GlobalHealthWins2025

To mark the tradition of Advent calendars, we are opening a new “door” each day until 24 December, sharing global health wins that brought progress and hope in 2025. 🌍✨

🔔 Door #5 – Beating an Ancient Cause of Blindness 👁️

In 2025, six countries – Burundi, Mauritania, Papua New Guinea, Senegal, Fiji and Egypt – were validated by WHO for eliminating trachoma as a public health problem.

Trachoma, the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness and a neglected tropical disease (NTD) has now been eliminated in 27 countries worldwide. Each success story reflects years of work with the WHO SAFE strategy (surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness and environmental improvements), stronger health systems and community-led action.

Germany remains engaged in the global effort against NTDs and was the first Western country to sign the Kigali Declaration on NTDs, backing the WHO road map to end these “invisible diseases” by 2030.

🌡️ Since NTDs still affect over a billion people and climate change drives their spread into new regions, including Europe, these successes serve as a powerful reminder that through perseverance and partnership, age-old diseases can also be defeated. ✨

💪 With sustained political will, funding and coordinated action across sectors, the global community can build on this momentum and move closer to ending NTDs everywhere.
