    Dear all,

I realised that GHHG unfortunately does not have a community yet concerning the very important area of ECO care (emergency, critical and operative care), and I wanted to check in to find out whether there is some interest in maybe trying to start a new community?
Surgery and operative care is such a broad field, and includes besides common trauma care (now especially important in conflict and disaster zones), also significant parts of women's health (maternal health, sexual traumas, FGM), child care, oncological care, pain management, emergency medicine, etc etc. There are already a few very good national and european/international organisations who focus on that, but I think it would be great if we could use our place and connections here as well!

Are you a surgeon, a gynaecologist, an anaethesiologist or someone else working in a sugical/operative field? Do you know someone that dows and would be interested?
What are your general thoughts about a Global Surgery Community?

Please let me know what you think!
Looking forward to hearing back from you,
    Charlotte

There are still countriesEmergency care is far more than Child Health; it is the path with the cheapest impact and the least lobby right now. There are still countries without ambulance systems, and it is a recent development that does not exist at all. Even in developed countries, emergency medicine is seriously underresourced and underreimbursed. As paramedics are nonacademic, there is also a severe need for more research. Even emergency medicine doctors tend to write more case studies than to do decent trials. Also there is a lack of public funding in emergency medicine and it is local regulated in almost any country.  Mehr...

I am currently trying to contact some people that have experience in this field and could be interested in supporting GHHGs work with us. Let me know if you have suggestions as well!

My perspective on global health was profoundly shaped by attending the 75th World Health Assembly as an IPSF Delegate. Before joining the International Pharmaceutical Students' Federation, I was unaware of the opportunities for pharmacy students and young people to participate in such influential forums. The experience of connecting with diverse stakeholders across various fields opened my eyes to the critical need for collaboration to create meaningful change. It was a powerful realization that we have the chance to actively shape the future of global health.

Being involved in policy drafting on behalf of IPSF, alongside other health professionals, further emphasized the importance of our voices and the impact we can have. This experience taught me that we can go beyond our studies and meaningfully engage in policy discussions to advocate for a healthier world. I'm incredibly grateful for this opportunity, as it sparked my passion for global health advocacy and fueled my commitment to making a positive contribution to the field.

For me, our activist work on vaccine equity in the COVID pandemic comes to mind. As national coordinator of UAEM Germany I worked together with many other members of UAEM and many more national and european NGOs to fight for equal access to vaccines. Right after work on vaccine development started, we organized demonstrations, did interviews, worked on advocacy and fought for fair and equal access to the COVID vaccines worldwide.
Later, this moved to advocating for Germany to stop blocking the TRIPS waiver, allowing for vaccine production and ownership outside of HICs and giving control of the vaccines to those who need it instead of western countries and companies deciding where the vaccines would go.

Sadly, we did not succeed. However, we worked together with many different organizations because we all knew what was the right thing to do and to fight for. That is why I would always do it again, because through our activism we helped push the topic of fair global health onto the agenda, many people got to know about the issues with the vaccine patent ownerships through our work and we empowered many younger members of all of our organizations to work on fair global health in the following years.

Activism for fair, postcolonial global health will always be hard work and progress will be moving slowly most of the times, but that is only another reason for us to push forward and to take part in discussion forums like this one, making our voices heard load and clear.

For me, my perspective onDear all, my name is Charlotte and I am looking forward to finally meeting as many of you as possible next thursday!

For me, my perspective on global health has also changed not so much through a single event, but rather through a collection of different experiences and interactions with people I have had the pleasure of meeting during my work with the G4 Alliance for obstetric, surgical and trauma care and now also the Global Surgery Umbrella.

Similar to Su, I was very lucky to have been invited to the last two WHAs, as well as now preparing the WHS and EGS Congress this October. During those events, but also in our general work, we talked to all different kinds of engaged people - reaching from a 20-year old cleft palate patient advocate to the representative of Nigerian midwives to high-level personnel like Dr John Meara from the Lancet Commission and even Dr Jim Kim.

Talking to this wide variety of people has not only opened my eyes to the complexity of the social, cultural and financial contexts we face as a GH community, but has also made it clear that we need an equally diverse and multidisciplinary approach to find solutions to these problems.

When we want to address health care, we also have to address gender equality, education, research, infrastructure, colonial relics, disability, human rights and so much more. It is not enough anymore to keep GH a purely medical problem. There are already so many great grass-root projects, fighting for a bottom-up revolution of health care, however, without the cooperation of policy makers and top-down changers, we will not be able to achieve the sustainable changes in care we aim for. Changes in health care can only be achieved if we manage to connect politics, cooperations and the community on a large global scale, and that is where I want to see the GHHG stepping in.

We migh have chosen different paths and careers, however, we should have the same goal: affordable, accessible and safe health care for all.

Before I answer the question, I would like to thank all the candidates for their participation. It makes me happy to see that there are people, who are willing to dedicate their time and energy to global health.

My perspective on global health has been shaped and continues to be influenced by my work with the Globalization and Health Initiative. Our initiative comprises a group of individuals passionate about global health, primarily students pursuing health-related studies. I have learned a lot by the work through organizing global health events, workshops, and writing articles, but the greatest impact has the engagement with fellow activists. Every meeting is both an inspiration and a valuable lesson for me.

I love the work and the people I have met through this initiative and hope to continue my commitment to global health in some way or another after completing my studies.
