The World Health Organization is seeking a Technical Officer for its Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), based in Honiara, Solomon Islands, within the Western Pacific Region. The role supports Member States in strengthening immunization programmes and protecting populations against vaccine-preventable diseases across the life course.
Position sought: A senior technical officer (grade P4) to provide technically sound advice on immunization planning, monitoring and evaluation, and to support the Ministry of Health and other national counterparts in delivering and sustaining vaccination programmes.
Main tasks: Provide technical support for developing the EPI plan in the assigned country/countries; support the planning and organization of vaccination campaigns; develop work plans, budgets and resource mobilization, and ensure the availability of potent vaccines, equipment and injection materials; analyze immunization data and provide feedback on the impact of newly introduced vaccines; support vaccine research and coordinate clinical trials of relevance; build immunization and vaccine-development capacity; serve as a technical resource on sustainable immunization, epidemics, pandemics and other public health emergencies; develop and disseminate guidelines for evaluating newly introduced vaccines; support the transition of WHO-supported surveillance systems to government institutions; liaise with national counterparts, HQ technical departments, and donor and development partners to harmonize policies and seek funding; and represent WHO at meetings.

Profile requirements: An advanced university degree in medicine, public health or human biology with a specialization in immunization- or vaccine-relevant areas (from an institution recognized in the WHED database). At least seven years of progressively responsible professional experience, including relevant international exposure, in immunization and vaccine-development programmes, with demonstrated experience supporting Member States and evaluating vaccine-preventable diseases and immunization programmes. First-hand experience in a developing country and prior experience with WHO, another UN agency or an international organization are desirable. Candidates need sound knowledge of vaccine-preventable diseases, disease burden and surveillance; research and analytical ability; strong drafting, communication and public-speaking skills; and the core WHO competencies. Expert knowledge of English is essential; beginner-level knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

Location: Honiara, Solomon Islands. Full-time, fixed-term appointment of two years.
