🤖 Evidence for AI in Health (EVAH) – Request for Proposals

The Evidence for AI in Health (EVAH) initiative—supported by Wellcome Trust, Gates Foundation, and Novo Nordisk Foundation—is now accepting proposals for its first funding call.

Delivered in partnership with Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab and African Population and Health Research Center, EVAH aims to build robust evidence on how AI can strengthen primary healthcare systems in low- and middle-income settings.

🔍 Overview

This call supports locally led evaluations of AI-enabled clinical decision support tools (CDSTs) that assist frontline health workers with tasks such as:

* Triage
* Diagnosis
* Referral

Projects should focus on real-world use in primary and community healthcare settings across:

* Sub-Saharan Africa
* South Asia
* Southeast Asia

The goal is to generate decision-relevant evidence to guide Ministries of Health, implementers, and funders on the responsible integration and scaling of AI in healthcare systems.


💰 Funding pathways

Applicants can apply to one of two tracks:

Pathway A – Early-stage evaluation

* Up to $1M USD
* Focus: usability, safety, workflow integration, adoption
* For tools already in early deployment

Pathway B – Impact at scale

* Up to $3M USD
* Focus: rigorous evaluation of health outcomes and system performance
* For tools ready for large-scale deployment

🌍 Who should apply

* Organisations or consortia with access to an AI-enabled CDST
* Applicants may include:

* Academic institutions
* NGOs / non-profits
* Government agencies
* Private sector organisations
* International organisations

📌 Key requirement:

* Proposals should be led by institutions based in the target regions
* Teams must have the capacity to conduct (or partner on) rigorous evaluations
