I studied at the University of Leeds in the UK, I was surprised to find a lot of relevant research in the University Library about my country, Malawi which was not available here. It meant that the research recommendations did not support Malawi in policy and decision-making processes. It is also difficult for local research organizations in LMICs to secure funding which in the opinion of many would be more relevant and applicable to local contexts. Establishing and sustaining effective partnerships on research between HICs and LMICs is one of the ways to strengthen the capacity of the latter. Another experience is that funding for health systems research in LMICs is overlooked when compared to resources for clinical research. Yet we are aware that for clinical research recommendations to be effectively implementable requires functioning health systems. These practices are biased and have colonial backgrounds.  More ...

We read a lot about international support that is going into Ukraine to restore broken health systems including the provision of mental health services. It would be ideal to learn about the social groups that are most affected by the war and the differentiated model of mental services that is being provided. The analysis can be conducted in all countries where there are conflicts to help the development of a standard package of interventions that can be adapted to suit specific situations.

Thanks for your great suggestions! Every year, the Hub Communities have an annual theme. Last year, it was "Planetary Health." The Community Manager selects a pertinent cross-cutting topic to connect Communities with each other, enabling them to jointly deliver meaningful contributions to policymakers and health practitioners in Germany and beyond. The output includes Policy Briefs or Community Papers, which showcase examples of what works, best practices, and policy recommendations, along with online events.

This year's annual theme will be "Global Health in Conflict Settings," with a call for contributions coming soon.

If you have other topics you would like to work on, please feel free to request something on the marketplace and find other interested Hub members who would like to join. You can also reach out to us, the Hub Management Team, if you have specific plans you would like to discuss.

The shocking news from Malawi is that the High Court ruled against LGBTQ two days ago. This means that LGBTQ will remain illegal in Malawi. We are yet to see how the LGBTQ community and stakeholders will react to the ruling. As health professionals, we are concerned that the ruling will further limit access to essential health services. Any piece of advice and lessons from the Forum will be appreciated.

Reflecting on my experience at the 77th WHA, I noticed that the interconnection of climate change with various areas of health, such as nutritional health and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), is gaining traction.
In addition, there was a focus on the importance of integrating climate resilience into health systems. This involves not only reducing the sector's environmental footprint but also ensuring that healthcare services can withstand and adapt to the impacts of climate change. For example, healthcare facilities must be prepared for extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change.
Also the importance of international collaboration in addressing these challenges was highlighted. Sharing best practices, research, and innovations across borders is crucial for developing effective strategies to mitigate the health impacts of climate change. There is a call for stronger policies and investments in sustainable healthcare, as well as increased awareness and education among healthcare professionals and the public about the links between climate change and health.

Thank you for initiating this important discussion Tarik Bolat. Ensuring equitable access to healthcare for LGBTQ+ individuals is crucial for achieving #HealthForAll.With our diverse global health community, including stakeholders from the healthcare sector and academia, we have a unique opportunity to drive meaningful change. I believe our first step shoudl be advocating for inclusive policies and comprehensive training for healthcare providers. This includes understanding the health needs of LGBTQ+ populations and addressing systemic barriers such as discrimination and lack of culturally competent care. Furthermore, to better understand and address these needs, we must prioritize more inclusive research and data collection. This approach will enable us to identify gaps in care and inform targeted interventions, ultimately working towards health equity for all. In that regard, let me share with you this interesting podcast on LGBTQ+ Health Equity.  https://mcpress.mayoclinic.org/rise-for-equity/pride-in-health-navigating-the-path-to-lgbtq-health-equity/  More ...
