Building resilient and sustainable Healthcare Systems in the Face of Climate Change
Resolved Locked Unanswered
Climate change is being regarded as the single greatest threat to public health, according to the WHO. It leads to increased mortality and morbidity mediated by extreme weather events, disruptions in the food system, vector-borne diseases, and mental health issues. While healthcare systems are significantly impacted by climate change, they also contribute around 5% of global carbon emissions.
I would like to discuss how we can effectively enhance the resilience of healthcare systems against climate change impacts, while simultaneously reducing their carbon footprint. Are there potential synergies we can leverage? Or do you know of any best practice examples that successfully addressed both problems? What specific actions do we need to take?
I am very much looking forward to your ideas and thoughts!

Hi Eva-Lotte,

a very interesting and important topic! I would like to suggest to be more specific on the context of health systems, since their contribution varies related to location. Also the drivers of emission may be different. Do you have any suggestions? Or others maybe?
I could think of starting with the German health care system. Not sure if you are aware but the working group Planetary health is currently working on a call for action related to this topic, so maybe you would like to join the discussion?

Best regards, Regine
