Modern tropical medicine not only addresses the classic infectious diseases of warm regions, but also the social determinants of health and the economic aspects of healthcare in middle- and low-income countries. The boundaries between curative and population-based preventive medicine are often fluid. The same applies to the closely related fields of international and global health and migration medicine. The Institute of International Health is located at the intersection of these topics. Here, patient care (returning travelers, migrants), specialized diagnostics, the prevention of vaccine-preventable diseases, and research activities in Berlin and abroad converge. Constantly changing infection patterns and new diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive options shape our daily lives.

We hope this event will provide you with insight into the changing, exciting, and broad field of modern tropical medicine. The speakers will be available for discussion afterward. Continuing education credits have been applied for with the Berlin Medical Association. We look forward to welcoming you to this symposium on May 7, 2025, and look forward to a lively exchange.

The Series directs special attention towards the added value of interdisciplinary and international cooperation in global health research. Every first Tuesday of the month, speakers share insights into their research projects while focusing on research processes, methods as well as lessons learned. Following the 30-minute speaker’s presentation, the Series encourages an academic exchange between the speaker and the audience in a 30-minute Q&A session.

Merike Blofield is Professor of Political Science at the University of Hamburg, with a focus on global health and social policy. Her collaborative work has recently been published by Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, The Lancet, and policy venues. She is currently working on child and maternal health & social policies and on policy efforts on violence against women and children. Before she moved to Hamburg in 2020, she was Professor of Political Science and Director of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Miami. She has received awards for both her research and institution-building at previous institutions. In this presentation, she will discuss how governments are moving from stated commitments to actual implementation in health and social policy, drawing on evidence from different policy initiatives.

The World Federation of Paediatric Intensive and Critical Care Society is introducing its Awareness Week, a global initiative where colleagues caring for critically ill children share their experiences and innovations in a modest and collaborative spirit. This event highlights the impact of climate change, epidemics, and socio-economic challenges on child health and clinical care. Through a series of podcasts and webinars, clinical teams and health workers from various regions will discuss their working environments and problem-solving strategies while outlining their expectations from global partnerships. For example, teams from Sub-Saharan Africa will explore how Madagascar’s increasing tropical storms disrupt healthcare infrastructure, agriculture, and even alter the epidemiology of infectious diseases such as malaria and dengue, further exacerbating food insecurity and malnutrition risks. In eastern DRC’s South Kivu, health workers will focus on the compounded challenges posed by a fragile health system, MPOX epidemics, conflict, and the needs of displaced populations. Moreover, all teams will describe how climate change adaptation measures—such as energy-efficient facility designs and the use of renewable energy (e.g., solar energy) to ensure decentralized oxygen provision, power essential biomedical equipment, and maintain cold chains for vaccinations—can not only reduce carbon emissions and other environmental impacts of health systems but also substantially improve access to essential health care services for vulnerable populations. Our colleagues will also emphasize the responsibility of industrialized countries to support climate change adaptation measures in regions that have historically contributed minimally to global CO₂ emissions.

The Centre for Planetary Health Policy (CPHP) invites participants to the 17th edition of the Planetary Health Dialogues on April 10, 2025 (online), focusing on the health impacts of biodiversity loss and the transition from global agreements to local solutions.

As biodiversity declines at an alarming rate, the protection of ecosystems remains crucial for both human health and sustainable development. Following the 2024 report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), this session will examine key recommendations for integrating health into biodiversity policies.

Speakers include Dr. Kim Grützmacher (Museum für Naturkunde/Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science), Barbara Engels (Federal Agency for Nature Conservation), and Prof. Dr. Claudia Hornberg (Chair of the German Advisory Council on the Environment). Discussions will explore how biodiversity strategies in Germany address the interconnection between ecosystems and public health.

Moderated by Nicole Stauf (CPHP), this webinar is part of a monthly series featuring scientists, policymakers, and civil society actors, fostering dialogue on planetary health and justice within ecological limits.

From April 3 - 4, the 16^th Malaria Meeting by the DTG | German Society for Tropical Medicine, Travel Medicine and Global Health e.V., the DZIF | German Center for Infection Research and the PEG | Paul-Ehrlich Society for Infection Therapie e.V. will take place at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Tübingen, Germany. We invite you to a crucial conversation on disability rights and the care and support economy, focusing on the often-overlooked role of persons with disabilities—especially women—as both recipients and providers of care. While discussions on care systems often center on caregivers, this event will highlight the importance of inclusive policies that uphold the rights and autonomy of people with disabilities.

We will hear firsthand from women with disabilities about their lived experiences and explore diverse perspectives on care and support from German, European, and international speakers. The event will conclude with an open discussion engaging all participants.

The Infectious Disease Alliance will host a webinar titled "Bridging One Health Horizons: Foodborne and Waterborne Diseases in a Changing World" on March 27, 2025, at 2:30 PM CET (9:30 AM EST). This webinar will bring together global experts, policymakers and researchers to explore collaborative approaches for addressing foodborne and waterborne diseases under One Health approach. 

The Infectious Disease Alliance (ID Alliance) will host a hybrid event titled "Bridging Science, Advocacy, and Practice: A Unified Approach to Combating Antimicrobial Resistance," taking place in Statens Serum Institut (SSI) Campus, Copenhagen, Denmark, and online via Teams on Monday, March 24, 2025, at 2:30 pm CET, 9:30 am EST. This event will bring together global experts, policymakers, researchers, and advocates to explore collaborative approaches for addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a growing global challenge that cuts across human health, animal health, agriculture, and the environment. This event will highlight the need for a unified, cross-sectoral approach—emphasizing the importance of the One Health framework—to address AMR.

The Department of General Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden is organising the interdisciplinary ‘Global Health Initiative Spring School’ in collaboration with the Institute of Political Science and the Chair of Public Health at TU Dresden.

Among other things, the Spring School will focus on the impact of socio-economic health determinants on the health burden, the importance of primary health care systems in reducing health disparities, the role of various international stakeholders and the impact of climate change and conflict on the health burden. The programme includes lectures and practice-oriented workshops led by international lecturers from a wide range of interdisciplinary professional groups. Participating institutions include the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Dresden Health Department and the local group Health For Future.

The Global Health Initiative Spring School is aimed at students from all faculties at TU Dresden and beyond. Through interprofessional and interdisciplinary learning, joint problem-solving strategies are trained. The aim is to familiarise students with fundamental concepts of global health.

The Infectious Disease (ID) Alliance will host a webinar titled "Salmonella Under the Microscope: Tackling Outbreaks and Enhancing Food Safety in Europe" on March 20, 2025, at 12:00 PM CET. 

Foodborne illnesses caused by Salmonella remain a significant public health challenge, especially in Europe, where outbreaks impact health systems and economies alike. This webinar aims to address the growing concerns surrounding Salmonella-related infections and their prevention. Experts will explore cutting-edge research, innovative technologies, and policy measures to strengthen food safety protocols and mitigate outbreaks.

On March 18–19, 2025, Akkon University of Human Sciences will host the 17th Scientific Symposium on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day. Organized by the Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA), the symposium will focus on the role of tuberculosis in the context of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and explore current challenges and solutions.

International experts from academia, politics, healthcare, and NGOs will discuss the latest developments in TB research, diagnostics, treatment, and prevention. In addition to keynote lectures and panel discussions, the event will serve as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange on tackling multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/XDR-TB).

The symposium will be held in a hybrid format – on-site at Akkon University and online via Zoom. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required.
