In celebration of Europe Day, the EU Office of TU Berlin, in cooperation with the EU Office of the BMBF (DLR Project Management Agency), invites early-career researchers to a two-day online event:

The Series directs special attention towards the added value of interdisciplinary and international cooperation in global health research. Every first Tuesday of the month, speakers share insights into their research projects while focusing on research processes, methods as well as lessons learned. Following the 30-minute speaker’s presentation, the Series encourages an academic exchange between the speaker and the audience in a 30-minute Q&A session.

Merike Blofield is Professor of Political Science at the University of Hamburg, with a focus on global health and social policy. Her collaborative work has recently been published by Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, The Lancet, and policy venues. She is currently working on child and maternal health & social policies and on policy efforts on violence against women and children. Before she moved to Hamburg in 2020, she was Professor of Political Science and Director of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Miami. She has received awards for both her research and institution-building at previous institutions. In this presentation, she will discuss how governments are moving from stated commitments to actual implementation in health and social policy, drawing on evidence from different policy initiatives.

Entrepreneurship Meets Health Innovation at Large-Scale Facilities

Hosted by the University of Hamburg, this week-long event connects researchers, students, and academic staff to explore how cutting-edge science at large-scale research facilities can drive health innovation and entrepreneurship. The program begins with a high-level conference featuring speakers from WHO, academia, and industry, followed by interactive workshops at institutions like European XFEL, EMBL, and CSSB. The World Federation of Paediatric Intensive and Critical Care Society is introducing its Awareness Week, a global initiative where colleagues caring for critically ill children share their experiences and innovations in a modest and collaborative spirit. This event highlights the impact of climate change, epidemics, and socio-economic challenges on child health and clinical care. Through a series of podcasts and webinars, clinical teams and health workers from various regions will discuss their working environments and problem-solving strategies while outlining their expectations from global partnerships. For example, teams from Sub-Saharan Africa will explore how Madagascar’s increasing tropical storms disrupt healthcare infrastructure, agriculture, and even alter the epidemiology of infectious diseases such as malaria and dengue, further exacerbating food insecurity and malnutrition risks. In eastern DRC’s South Kivu, health workers will focus on the compounded challenges posed by a fragile health system, MPOX epidemics, conflict, and the needs of displaced populations. Moreover, all teams will describe how climate change adaptation measures—such as energy-efficient facility designs and renewable energy use (e.g., solar energy) to ensure decentralized oxygen provision, power essential biomedical equipment, and maintain cold chains for vaccinations—can reduce carbon emissions and improve access to essential services for vulnerable populations. Colleagues will further outline how minimal standards for essential paediatric and neonatal emergency and critical care—across different levels of referral pathways—can be defined via WHO recommendations and the contributions of international professional societies, emphasizing that access to these vital services is a key element of universal health care coverage, as outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In this presentation, Lajous will explore how the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new challenges for epidemiologic cohorts evaluating the impact of risk factors on non-communicable disease mortality. Using data from the Mexican Teachers’ Cohort and the Polish-Norwegian Study, he will discuss patterns of mortality during and after the pandemic, and outline various causal inference methods for dealing with competing risks like COVID-19 deaths. The talk will also delve into advanced analytic strategies such as g-formula, IPTW, and separable treatment effects, including their application in real-world studies on colon and prostate cancer.

The Centre for Planetary Health Policy (CPHP) invites participants to the 17th edition of the Planetary Health Dialogues on April 10, 2025 (online), focusing on the health impacts of biodiversity loss and the transition from global agreements to local solutions.

As biodiversity declines at an alarming rate, the protection of ecosystems remains crucial for both human health and sustainable development. Following the 2024 report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), this session will examine key recommendations for integrating health into biodiversity policies.

Speakers include Dr. Kim Grützmacher (Museum für Naturkunde/Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Science), Barbara Engels (Federal Agency for Nature Conservation), and Prof. Dr. Claudia Hornberg (Chair of the German Advisory Council on the Environment). Discussions will explore how biodiversity strategies in Germany address the interconnection between ecosystems and public health.

This course conveys general concepts, and principles of human rights approaches within the health sector to “leave no one behind” – which has become even more relevant in times of US financial withdrawal. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical application through case studies and examples by health advocates who have engaged in human rights advocacy for decades.

Course participants will gain a deeper understanding of human rights and the right to health, Global Health and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the WHO pandemic agreement and intellectual property rights in the context of access to medicines. The right to health will be discussed in the field of gender, disability, migration, drug use and detention through expert inputs, exchanges with affected people and through country case studies. It is also envisaged to visit a local refugee centre in order to gain practical insights into the right to health for refugees.

Three years after the adoption of the European Union Global Health Strategy, the European Commission is organising the 2025 Global Health Policy Forum (GHPF). 

Global health stakeholders will gather to take stock of the implementation of the Strategy, assess current and future challenges, and discuss what lies ahead for the global health agenda. The objective of the Forum is to foster constructive dialogue and strengthen engagement among key global health stakeholders.
